Ricky Houghton & He Korowai Trust

Ricky Houghton is fully aware of the need for sustainable development in communities in the far North. 73% of his community is Maori, 82% is on some kind of benefit and 43% of families are single parent.

In 2003 He Korowai Trust assisted 192 families to avoid eviction, mortgagee sales and repossessions and provided financial assistance, help with employment and community group assistance for many more.

The services at He Korowai Trust are on overload, but with the Vodafone NZ Foundation behind him, Ricky feels that he will be able to continue and expand his existing role with the Trust in Kaitaia, helping families with issues that fall outside government agency and iwi service provision.
