July 2004 - Paul JeffriesOlsem wanem (G’day)… July was hectic for us at the Malakula Medical Relief Trust as we were concentrating on filling another twenty foot container for shipment to Vanuatu. Once again I was blown away with the generosity of all those concerned, from manufacturers such as Marley, Hurricane, Heinz-Wattie’s and Pacific Wire, to those who assisted with cash donations, such as Legal Search Ltd. (Thanks Jeremy). It’s important that people realise that without this type of ongoing support, the work we’re carrying out would cease. We, and the people of Malakula, are eternally grateful - long may it continue. In the latest container we sent in excess of 305 items. Over 120 boxes of clothes and toys, two pallets of food, 80 cartons of medical supplies, enough building material for a further eight x 20,000-litre water tanks, over five kilometres of alkathene pipe for water supply and new wheels for the truck. The staff at Vodafone collected about forty boxes of second hand and new clothing, toys and footballs…. more on that next month. The container ship, which was due to pick up our container, ran aground somewhere in the Pacific. So we had a few frantic days worrying that the goods wouldn’t get to Vanuatu in time for the Vodafone staff who were coming up in August. Fortunately, PDL shipping came to the rescue and found us another ship within a few days and the goods were finally on their way. Thanks guys…a job well done. It was nice to put July to bed as it was a fairly stressful month to say the least. If you thought we made a difference this month…just wait till you read next month…Oh what a difference.
